Great dinner restaurant a short distance from Sultanahmet

eviemichael Nov 28, 2012 06:46 AM

I'll be in Istanbul mid-December just for one night during an overnight stay on my way to the States.
We'll be arriving around 5:30pm at the hotel in Sultanahmet and we probably won't have the energy to venture out too far.

From what I've read Sultanahmet isn't a great area for food. Where is a great place we can go that isn't too far out? We will have to be waking up early the next day and just want to keep it low maintenance. Is it easy to get taxi's to get around?

We are looking for authentic delicious Turkish food- I don't mind if it is somewhat modern, but not too fussy. Nice atmosphere is a bonus, but not necessary.

Balikçi Sabahattin, one of the best fish restaurants in Istanbu,l is a short walk. Have your hotel reserve. Sur Balik is also a possibility.

I think we're more interested in meat than fish. Does Sur Balik serve meat dishes? Thanks!

        I don't think so.

Do you (or anyone else) know any places that isn't too far from Sultanahmet with great food?

I literally just ate here (Balikci Sabahattin) an hour ago. No, they do not have any meat dishes on the menu.
I had eggplant mezze, mixed salad, sea bass, and a glass of white wine.
        Cost was 75TL.
        The sea bass was great.

I think actually we are just going to go to Balikçi Sabahattin. Its close, looks good, and if my husband needs his meat fix maybe he can grab a kebab somewhere on the way back...
Are there street kebab places around the area at night?

I also recommend Balikci Sabahattin. It is really a great place. The appetizers are fantastic and so is the fish. The people range from family groups to rich and famous.
