In Search of Apple Jelly

TerriDawn Nov 20, 2012 10:53 AM

Dear Hounds:

Any ideas about where I might find apply jelly in the Mid-City area or on the Westside? When I was growing up here in Los Angeles, it was readily availbale in all of the supermarkets; but it has disappeared. I remember Smuckers and Tropical brands offered Apple Jelly.

The demographics have changed dramatically, and markets that used to be in areas populated mostly by Blacks from the South are now catering to a Latino demographic. My Cuban husband used to joke that Mexicans and Central Americans must not like apple jelly. I don't know if that is true, but the markets no longer seem to carry it; and the Cuban markets where we buy guava paste and jelly never did carry apple.

I'd like to bake my grandmother's apple jelly cake for the Holidays, if I can get some apple jelly. I'm not looking for preserves. Just plain, old apple jelly. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks from,
T-D. González

P.S. It just occurred to me to search the Smucker's web site. I guess my husband's theory was all wrong because the stores that carry apple jelly are all in Downey, Whittier, Paramount, Bellflower, and Norwalk! I'm still interested to know if any of your Chowhounds have seen it in Mid-City or on the Westside. Thanks again.

I make my own. Still have 3 jars so, if you're desperate . . . let me know.

I see what you mean about Smuckers; just Stater Brothers apparently amongst the chains. I did find Tropical's website and they are Los Angeles based. You might try contacting them. Good luck! http://tropicalpreserving.com/home_pa...

I happened back on this thread and noticed the link I posted back on November 20, 2012 is now dead. Here is the new link to contact Tropical. http://www.tropicalpreserving.com/con...

I've seen it at Gelsons, Bristol Farms, and the grocery at Farmer's Market.

Yes, I have noticed that Gelson's is carrying several shelves of the Stonewall products.
It might be worth a call to find out if they have the apple jelly.

The Stonewall product is called "Cinnamon Apple Jelly" and it is delicious.
