How many cups of stuffing for a 16 lb turkey?

Hi- I am making my stuffing on Weds and cooking a pan in advance since I have two guests who won't eat stuffing if it has been cooked inside the turkey. Anyhoo.........I need to know how many cups of the stuffing to reserve for putting in the 16 lb turkey on Thursday for those of us who do eat it. Advice much appreciated! Thank you!

  1. The rule of thumb is the same as serving size which is a ½ to ¾ cup per person or per pound of bird- so a minimum of 8 cups.

Unless you are dead set on cooking all your stuffing in the bird, other than for the two who wont eat it, I would make enough to serve the number of people you are feeding, plus extra for leftovers. We never seem to have enough stuffing leftover! If you end up with extra, just bake it ouside bird.

At any rate you should always very loosely stuff your turkey So keep in mind that depending on the type of stuffing you might have to use a lot more or a lot less. Really dense stuffing needs even more room to expand.

    1. Joy of Cooking says 8 to 10 cups of stuffing is enough to stuff a 14lb to 17lb turkey.

Per the 1997 edition I pulled.

I've got them going back to the 1959 edition. LOL.

1 lb of sandwich bread plus all the other ingredients including 1/2 to 1 cup chix stock , 1 to 2 eggs, onion celery, butter and spices is their 8-10 cup recipe.

      1. Thank you both very much!
