Suggestions? Last Toronto date night before new baby arrives!

Hello there! I've just been recommended to use this site, and am loving it. Can't wait to try out the recipes, BUT I first have a request for suggestions!

I’m living 2 hours outside of Toronto, and am pregnant - our first baby is due mid-December. My husband is flying in on Saturday November 24th, we haven’t seen each other in 3 months, and we have decided to have one last date night on the town in Toronto before heading up North where we’ll be hanging out till the baby is born!

A night on the town, at this stage, will pretty much be comprised of a nice dinner, and a place to sit afterwards and chat for dessert, with some wine for him and a nice mocktail for me. Ideally this would involve being able to listen to some jazz somewhere with at least a chair if not a table. We’re in our mid-30’s and normally based in some pretty dangerous places, so just sitting together in a restaurant where the only worry is how dessert will be, is pretty luxurious for us. We don’t want to go to a full show, concert, or do loads of walking around because (a) it’s grey cup weekend so everywhere will be packed, and (b) he’ll be flying in from the Pacific so will be pretty tired.

I know the main areas of Toronto well enough to walk around or take the TTC, but haven’t been in the loop to know where to go for this type of evening, so my questions are:

Because of the Grey Cup and lack of anything below $300, we’re staying out at a hotel at Pearson. I was thinking we could take the airport shuttle downtown, then a taxi back later. Is this the best option or are there other ways to go back and forth that don’t involve 3 transfers (which I think is the TTC route)?

Any suggestions on a great place to go for dinner? He’s Italian, and we both LOVE food, and don’t mind splurging but it has to be for atmosphere (cozy versus cold and industrial) and really good food -- not just for name or location. For example, we don’t like any of the big box places (Kelsey’s style, etc.), but also don’t have the budget for a place like Canoe and since this is a special night out, want something a few steps up from our favorite local Thai joint (though we do love Thai). When we were around last year, we had some really great Canadian fare down in the distillery district. Something like that would be great.

What about areas of the city and places to go for both dinner and afterwards? I want to shy away from Dundas but what about the Queen St. Area? Any other options, i.e. out in the Beaches or something similar?

Thanks so much!

How about excellent, upscale Italian food at Mistura, then upstairs to Sopra for cocktails and jazz?

I think that's an excellent solution - to everything but the transportation. Certainly both Jazz and food. But really difficult to get to - maybe cab both ways (~$65 each way).
If you drop the Jazz preference then Auberge de Pommier (Yonge & York Mills) meets most other criteria. There's a GO (Govt of Ontario) Bus that goes from Airport Road/Pearson Airport with only 1-stop to York Mills Bus Terminus ( it's the Brampton #34 route) BUT there's only 1 or 2 per hour outside peak times - but it's (almost) direct and less than half the cost of the Airport Shuttle (which will drop you in the heart of downtown with all the crowds). The restaurant is a 5 minute walk from the terminal (if you can find the right exit, otherwise allow 10 minutes).

CAUTION: The bus stop itself is difficult to find, and not well-signed (so look for it when he arrives).

For Thai and jazz, you could try combining Khao San Road and the Rex Hotel for a night out. They're not exactly side by side, but they are walking distance from one another.

On a Saturday night on Grey Cup eve?
Love the idea in principle - but getting seated 'quickly' at Khao San Road is a challenge. Not that it's even feasible - but I wouldn't want to stand outside being 8 months pregnant!

Oh it's tonight? Oh crappy,. Okay, try this combo...

Mengrai Thai and the Dominion on Queen. Reservations available at Mengrai, seats always available at the Dominion. Easy walking distance or you could take the Queen car about 3 stops or take a 6 buck taxi.
