“Port Chocolate” Leo Leo Gelato and Joebella Coffee at Farmstand 46 (Templeton Gap)
Yesterday our first stop after a leisurely breakfast at the beach house was Farmstand 46. My friend had coffee, pour-over style brewed to order, and pronounced it the only decent coffee she’d had in nearly a week of trying different cafes. The beans come from local roaster, Joebella.
No coffee for me, instead I was distracted by the freezer case, featuring Leo Leo Gelato made in Paso Robles. The counter guy was happy to let me try all of the five available flavors: Salted caramel, Vanilla, Chocolate, Roasted Pumpkin, and Port Chocolate. Other than the Port Chocolate, I found them all a shade too sweet. But though a little too sugary and faint on pumpkin, I still chose the seasonal pumpkin as my second flavor in a single size cup, $4, because it was a brighter companion for the richer tones of the Port Chocolate. The fortified dessert wine for the gelato comes from Cypher, the winery sibling of Farmstand 46. The red wine-y notes rounded out and deepened the chocolate and also made it seem less sweet. The scooper semi-apologized for the near melted, soft state of the Port Chocolate gelato due to the high alcohol content, but I preferred its texture to the others.
