Date Nut Ball recipe...without Rice Krispies!

Almost 20 years ago, I used a friend's mom's recipe to make date nut balls, rolled in coconut. Shortly after that, the recipe was lost. Since my friend's mom had passed away, the recipe was well and truly gone and I've felt a guilty about it ever since.

For the first time since then, I'll be spending Christmas with this friend. I want to try and find this recipe and surprise them with the date nut balls. What I remember is:

There were just a handful of ingredients and it involved a lot of stirring while it boiled or simmered on the stovetop.

The mixture was supposed to 'cool' for a few minutes before being rolled into balls and then rolled in coconut - but even with cooling for the recommended time period, it was still pretty darn hot!

Almost every recipe I'm finding online includes Rice Krispies, and that is definitely one ingredient NOT included in the recipe I'm trying to recreate. :)

So, with those scant clues...does this sound familiar to anyone? I appreciate the help!
