looking for a whisky comparable to Laphroaig 18 Year

pete k Nov 13, 2012 05:02 PM

Can any of you hounds recommend something similar to the Laphroaig 18 Year Old Islay Single Malt that's in the same price category or even lower? I'm looking for something in the $50-$100 range.

Cheers,

Pete K

    Laphroaig Quarter Cask

    Perhaps:
    Caol Ila 12 Year
    Ardbeg 10 Year

I was going to recommend the quarter cask also, I actually like it better than the 18 - especially now that PA (where I am going over Christmas) has raised the price on the 18 yr to $70 from $60, whereas I can get the QC for less than $50. (Oddly enough, right now it is on sale in PA cheaper than the 10 yr).

Laphroaig triplewood is also good but usually runs about the same price as the 18 yr at $70, though PA has it for $60 and I might pick up a bottle while I'm there.

        Why would you change?

Not necessarily a change, but something more friendly on the pocketbook.

Just stay on Islay for a peaty substitute. Along with yarm's recommends, maybe Lagavulin 16 year.

Ardbeg 17 yr? If you can find it more like $300-400. Unless you're talking Murray-McDavid in which case $150+.
