"Improved Whiskey Cocktail" (Old Fashion)

Any Rachel Maddow watchers out there? I think every Friday night she does a cocktail at the end of the show. This past weeks she did the "Improved Whiskey Cocktail".

2 oz Rye
.25 oz Simple Syrup
.25 oz Luxardo Maraschino
2 Dashes of Angasturo
Rinse glass with Absinthe and discard extra
Lemon Twist

Really fine cocktail....

Its as if a Manhattan married a Sazerac. This variation sounds very interesting to me.

More like a Sazerac that left New Orleans, bypassed Manhattan, and landed in Rome. ;) Unless you want to sub some sweet vermouth for that simple syrup. Which doesn't sound like a bad idea.

2 oz Rye, .5 SV, .25 Maraschino, a cherry.

I add Chocolate bitters to this. Love it.

This cocktail was probably fro the PDT cocktail book, as Maddow wrote a back dust jacket praise. The proper credit should be sited as Jerry Thomas in the 1876 Bar-Tenders Guide, according to Jim Meehan and PDT.

True. Jerry Thomas' 1876 book improved on the 1862 Fancy Whiskey Cocktail by swapping the Fancy's curacao (the hot cocktail ingredient back in 1862) to maraschino and absinthe (the hot ingredient in 1876). The Fancy was an improvement over the regular Whiskey Cocktail (now known as the Old Fashioned Old Fashioned).
