Suggestions for a convivial, tapas-style birthday meal for a vegetarian in Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Boerum Hill?

My mom is a vegetarian (not vegan) and loves snacks. I'd like to take her out to dinner somewhere near my house in the North Slope. We went to The Vanderbilt last year, which was perfect, because it had a lot of nice vegetarian appetizers and a good atmosphere, but it would be nice to try something new. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I think Geido (Flatbush Ave. near 7th Ave.) would be an excellent candidate for this. Do you and your mom like Japanese food?

I know Beast serves tapas-style, but I haven't been there, so can't speak to the quality of the food. Olea in Fort Greene serves mostly Middle Eastern tapas, but that might be farther than you're looking to trek.

Convivium Osteria and Franny's are much better restaurants and, though they don't really serve tapas, both have a fairly large selection of appetizers.

Beast is not all that good - Convivium and Frannys would be much better. I wonder whether the new place at Carlton and Flatbush, Carlton Park, which I havent seen discussed here, might be a good pick. http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2012/0...

If you give it a try I hope you report back!

Thanks, that's a good idea! I live around the corner from Convivium, unfortunately my mom also isn't crazy about seafood, because they have a nice seafood appetizer platter. Franny's might be a good bet, too.

I llike Convivium's and my veg daughter can usually find some dishes - for example pasta/gnocchi or special salads - the apps menu is limited. You can twist yourself in a knot over a vegetarian or you can make sure that there are enough good dishes to satisfy them and move on to consider your own meal
