Gulfport/Tampa - SICHUAN PEPPERCORNS! Where?

Hello from Los Angeles, Floridian 'hounds.

In Los Angeles, Sichuan peppercorns and all manner of Chinese and Asian ingredients are easy to find. But I have a friend who just moved to Gulfport, and I'm trying to help her find Asian pantry staples (let alone fresh fruits and veg)

I read the post about Great World Supermarket in Ft. Meyers, but was hoping there'd be a source closer to her home. Fish sauce would be an added bonus, though this seems to be easier to find even in western supermarkets these days, on the "Asian shelf" next to the soy sauce, sesame oil and La Choy Chow Mein noodles.

Please help!

  1. There are a large number of Asian markets in southern Pinellas County. Just to name a few you have Dong A with one location on 49th St around 87th ave north I believe and another location around 30th ave north and 16th street. Also, Cho Lon on 34th St just north of 54th ave north. There is another right around the corner from that one, it is on 62nd ave north about 1 1/2 to 2 blocks west of 34th St north..........probably another half dozen at least in the area, but those are the ones we frequent

Thanks for the reply. Do you know for certain that these markets sell Sichuan peppercorns? Asia is a big place, after all, and a market which primarily sells Indonesian goods (for example) alongside a smattering of pan-Asian groceries would be unlikely to stock them.

Yes, I have purchased Sichuan peppercorns at at least one of them. Also, the markets do carry a variety of asian produce, but you can oftem find a better assortment and prices at the Wagon Wheel/Mustang Fleamarket on Park Blvd on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Just tell them to make sure to go to the asian section.....it's outdoor on the west end of the market

    2. MD Oriental Market

      1. In downtown Tampa: http://oceanicmarket.com/

If they don't have sichuan peppercorns, it's probably the only Asian item they *don't* carry -- it's bigger than most neighborhood groceries, and they regularly carry things like durian, jackfruit, quail eggs and canard lacquée....they HAVE to carry the peppercorns.

i got peppercorns at Din Ho market on Armenia in Tampa. I'm sure Oceanic or MD would have them too.

I second this suggestion, They do carry it both in smaller and quite large bags. There are few items that I have sought for Chinese (a myriad of regional variants) / Japanese / Indian / Thai cuisine that they do not carry.

          2. Gulfport has a Tuesday morning Farmers Market. One of the booths is asian pantry items, sauces, mixes noodles etc. They may have it and it's close to home. I like the little asian market in Seminole Tung Fong 5775 Seminole Blvd. It is about 20 minutes from Gulfport. Super nice people and usually have what I am looking for. Juli

            1. Savory Spice Shop downtown St Pete has them as well as great selection of other spices. I also purchased grains of paradise, fennel pollen, and a few others. They allow you to buy in small amounts to large jars depending on your needs, as well as taste any product. Great place
