Let them eat Cake....all 40 of them

Toronto Chowhounders!
I'm in need of a large slab-cake to feed 35+ at the end of the month.
I'm not really looking for a highly stylized cake per-say but I do want something made well and delicious. I think I'm leaning towards a strawberry shortcake (I know it's November....if anyone else has recommendations for a real crowd pleasing cake, by all means).

ANYHOW, any recommendations on who I might turn to? Bakers/shops/caterers/etc...
Suggestions already include Dufflet, The Sweet Gallery....

I got a great sheet cake for a work function from the Dessert Lady in Yorkville. The cake was moist, and the frosting was real buttercream Yum! And the prices are totally within your budget.

Agree with eatravel - Dessert Lady is great for general people pleasing cakes when you don't need a "wow" just a decent cake

If you decide on a plain-ish slab cake (chocolate, marble, etc.) then this place is good. Cakes are moist and delicious.

Very good fresh fruit cake with fresh whipping cream or any of their mousse cake. All custom made to order. Light sponge cake. Instead of fresh fruits, you can ask for just strawberries. They also make an awesome Tiramisu.

Is it really whipped cream or vegetable oil topping. Too many times I have been disappointed by what looks like cream, but isn't.

Agreed - it is very important that it be made with real cream.

I gotta agree with the Portuguese bakery option. My fave is Brazilian bakery and cafe on Dundas just West of dufferin. They have a great selection. A bit old school but that in and of itself I find neat. Also you can pick yourself up some custard tarts!

            Try a good Polish bakery.
The strawberries will be excellent - for photography. But that is the way it is nowadays, year round, which is the problem, year round.
I see prune plums and sour cherries in your past; they should be in your future. Good ones available canned.

Ooooh, a large plum cake would be really nice! Half our family is Ukrainian so they'll undoubtedly appreciate it! Nice suggestion!

I didn't mean Future. Try a dollop of Maslanka beside the cak e . Better than ice cream. MC is a bit better than Western. but both are good.

Vinnie, which Polish bakeries are the good ones?

Do you have a budget? Because there is a wide range in terms of cost and quality.

I'm hoping I can feed all those faces for $2-3 per slice...like $140max.
