We'll be spending a couple of nights in Sacto soon, and trying to decide where to stay and eat. Motel will be a La Quinta, since they'll welcome our fur kids. The two choices are downtown or Sacramento North, off I-80. I need to know which one will give us better choices for dinner nearby - nothing fancy, but no chains either. Good wine/beer list is a plus.
The Sacto North location is quite away outside of town in the suburbs, so not much out that way for dining.
The downtown location is just outside of downtown, near the river, but just a few minutes from the city center. There are a few restaurants right in that area, with river views. Once you drive into the city, the Midtown neighborhood, east of the capitol, is a pleasant, walkable neighborhood with a range of restaurants from casual to more fancy. Lots of choices.
Do you need someplace that is dog friendly with patio dining?
No, a nice thought but our pooches are senior citizens, one deaf the other almost blind, and aren't real manageable on a patio. They'll snooze happily in the car while we eat.
I appreciate what you say about the location, I had a hunch the Sacto North area would be less interesting. Midtown area sounds just right, casual is better than fancy.
Last year I enjoyed a casual meal at Hot Italian, here's the report,
In August, I attended a reception at Spataro, which is right by the Capitol. I enjoyed the passed hors d'oeuvres. I was told it's the best happy hour in the area, in case you want to make a light and early meal of snacks.
