Best ice cream?

ipsedixit Nov 5, 2012 09:00 PM

So I searched.

And it seems like Mariposa was generally recommended for ice cream in SD.

Went tonight and had the rum raisin and pumpkin. Good, and tasty, but was not as creamy and velvety as I would like. And, yes, I know it's Philly-style ice cream, but I've had egg-less ice creams that were much smoother. The pumpkin, which I am told is custard based, was also not as creamy as I'd like, but certainly denser in terms of mouthfeel.

And the flavors of the ice cream also seemed a bit flat -- almost as if they were too sweet.

Solid place for ice cream. A very high 7 (on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being best).

So where else do people recommend for ice cream?

If you also look for gelato instead of ice cream Pappalecco (Little Italy and Hillcrest) and Chocolat (Gaslamp and Hillcrest) are very good.

No. Just ice cream. Not gelato. Different creatures all together.

You know who else has good gelato, at least in my opinion? The Chuao store at the UTC Mall. I always go there for a Cafe Mocha (why people form huge lines at Star$$$$$ when this place has just as good coffee, much better chocolate based coffees, and no lines is beyond me), and occasionally get offered tastes. It's about as good as I've had in San Diego, though I've not been to Chocolat.

It's funny you post this. I was there last week, and felt the ice cream had way too many ice crystals for my liking. I figured I was just a victim of unlucky timing and was going to go again before I was going to raise the "overrated" flag, but maybe there is more to it than that.

It's what happens when you under churn Philly-style ice cream.

Thank you - I did not know that. It amazes me what I learn on Chowhound when I'm not yapping too much.
