"Clean base with damp cloth and dry thoroughly."

      You mean this, right?

The copper exterior is protected by lacquer. So just clean it with water and detergent.

If you have the correct beast,I wouldn't even use detergent.

All I ever use to clean the exterior of a stand mixer, mixers over the years is damp, lint free cloth, several if need be,polish damp and then polish dry.If you treat the exterior like a beverage glass, window or stem it will look new maybe forever. My personal experience is over 40 years, easy.
