Substitute for Vegetable Shortening in Parker House Rolls

rmk3034 Nov 2, 2012 07:30 AM

I would like to make Parker House rolls for a dinner this weekend (http://www.bonappetit.com/recipes/201...) but would rather not use vegetable shortening (or lard for that matter). Would butter work here? If so, in what ratio?

Thanks so much for the advice!

I would use butter and I would use it in the same amount as specified for the vegetable shortening. No problem.

Coconut oil (virgin) is another, healthier option, also swaps evenly with shortening and/or butter.

Hey Grey, I have just learned about the health aspects of coconut oil and am subbing it for butter. So far so good, made a grilled cheese tonight that was so good. Want to figure out some salad dressings, pasta sauces and any thing else that will taste just as good or better, if only because I know it's healthier. Got any good to great ideas? Tried it on popcorn and was very dubious but.... delicious!

      Butter. Same amount.

Thanks for the tips. I used butter and it worked out great. This was my first time making rolls and they were quickly gobbled up. Would recommend again.

          Feels good, doesn't it?
