The Great Halloween Sushi Caper (aka how Sushi Couture redeemed themselves in my books)

Not that long ago, I posted on the Sushi Couture thread about a particularly abysmal night of service I had with friends at the restaurant. The food was great, as it's always been, but the service was epic, in a profoundly bad way. Since then, I've ordered delivery from them a few times through Orderit.ca and the food has been great - a bit pricey but the best takeout sushi I've found.

Last night, we were having a good sized crowd of pint-sized goblins and their families for pre and post trick-or-treating fun, along with a variety of chow (of the non-candy variety). I decided to order a party platter and a few other things from Sushi Couture. What followed was a very bizarre series of events, the upshot of which was a crapload of sushi and a massive redemption for Sushi Couture.

My husband went to pick up the food and arrived back home about a half-hour before the crowd was due to arrive. Mystified by the lack of a platter in his arms, I start opening up the packages and realize that it's completely the wrong order. Not even close. So I call Sushi Couture back and very politely explain that they've given us the wrong order. The kind woman on the other side of the phone notes that our order is still there at the restaurant and says that the food I'm describing doesn't sound like an order they prepared that evening, and that nobody matching my husband's description has been in there in the past hour.

Well now I'm mystified. So I check the bag and see "New Generation Sushi" on the chopsticks. My confusion enters a new level - my husband picked up a different order from a different restaurant?? While my husband starts calling New Generation Sushi on his cell, the lovely woman at Sushi Couture tells me how badly SHE feels about all of this. In spite of my assurances that she has no need to feel badly - it had nothing to do with them, she insists on discounting our order AND paying for a cab to send it to our place. I've never ordered from them directly, they have no idea who I am, they did nothing wrong - and yet, such a magnanimous gesture. I was blown away and thanked her profusely.

For those curious as to what transpired on my husband's outing, it was this...husband (who really is smart and lovely, albeit overworked and obviously not too attentive at times) inadvertantly walks into New Generation Sushi (let's also ignore the fact that he's been to Sushi Couture before...). He tells them he's there to pick up an order and they direct him to their other restaurant across the street. So now he walks into the second place (with a New Generation Sushi sign, on the wrong side of the street) and gives them my first name, which the order was under. The server confirms the order by saying our last name, and my husband says yes. Out he goes with the wrong sushi order. When he calls back, he finds out that the name they actually said (with a heavy-ish accent) sounds a lot like our last name but is actually someone else's first name. Voila - that's how we ended up with a lot of sushi and a renewed love for Sushi Couture.

You can't make this stuff up.

  1. Ha amazing! Well again I'm happy to know my mediocre experience was an anomaly. We will try it again but order (not eat in) as you do. Thanks for the laughs :)
