SmashBurger Coming to Culver City...

Mattapoisett in LA Oct 29, 2012 12:30 PM

There was activity in the old Famima [rip] space at Venice and Overland. In the window was an ABC sign listing SmashBurger Acquisitions as the owner. They are just starting the jackhammering of the floor so It may be a few months before this is up and running.

I've been to Smashburger in La Jolla and I actually really liked it. A good fast food burger.

First Five Guys and now Smashburger moving in on In N Out's territory.

...and from the looks of the lines I frequent @ In n Out neither one will make a dent in their business.

DIfferent price point entirely for Smashburger, and worth the difference, IMNSHO.

There's a shopping area that has both about 2 miles from me here in SLC. I've gone to SB 5 or 6 times for every visit to InO.

Now that I've been diagnosed as diabetic that ratio will no doubt go way up. SB's Veggie Frites are nice alternative to spuds... and I will miss InO spuds for sure.

Went to 5 Guys once and could not have been less impressed with the burger, though I liked the fries a lot.

+1 re your assessment of five guys. Actually, the meal we had at the culver city location was fine, nothing earth shattering, but tasty. Then I went again to one out in Ventura County, and perhaps I got the wrong things on the burger this time, but I did not like it as well, I didn't even finish it, which is rare for me. But the fries were great.

The one time I tried smashburger in Vegas I wasn't impressed with them as a competitor to On n Out's niche.

From Grub Street "...expected debut sometime before the end of 2012, with many, many more to follow."

How do you find Smashburger compared to Five Guys? I have not heard of this chain except for here.

I liked it more than five guys. The meat was more flavorful and seasoned with a good sear. Patty was also juicer but I don't remember if you order to temperature. Not quite as messy as five guys. You can choose your bun from Classic Egg, Multi-grain, Spicy chipotle. Torta roll or just Lettuce. Choice of cheese including American, Aged Swiss ,Blue. Goa, Pepper jack, or Sharp cheddar. Each city has it's own special burger in SAN DIEGO it's Fresh avocado, fresh cilantro and onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and spicy chipotle mayo on a torta roll. Served with a wedge of lime. Burgers run around $6 and about $1.50 more for a big smash (a double). It's a good fast food burger.

...but In n' Out will always be my favorite.

In Thousand Oaks they have an LA Burger with Crispy wonton, fried egg, cilantro, cucumber, lettuce, tomato and Japanese steakhouse ginger dressing on a black and white sesame seed bun. Maybe this will be on Culver City menu.

In N Out should open a branch next to every 5 guys and Smashburger to see what happens.
