buzzardbreath Oct 29, 2012 09:03 AM

I am searching for a recipe for mincemeat pie filling, preferably without suet or green tomato. Does anyone have a recipe you would recommend? Thanks in advance!...

You'd probably have better luck using the Vegetarian & Vegan board:

I'm still getting the hang of posting topics...sorry for the confusion. I'm not looking for vegan per se, just a meatless-tomatoless recipe (personal taste preference). Many thanks to all for the recipes! These ought to get me started in the mincemeat making! ;-)

      Haven't tried these:

      Lemon Mincemeat from 1934

      All-Fruit Mincemeat from 1991

Pineapple Mincemeat, Lemon Mincemeat from 1955

My mincemeat recipes has apples, raising, currants, orange peel and butter. I suppose you could sub in coconut oil, but it might affect the flavor ...

Your recipe sounds like just the thing. The butter would be fine. I am basically trying to avoid the suet and ground meat in most mincemeat recipes, just personal preference. Would you mind sharing your recipe, if possible, please? I would be grateful. Thanks.

            For the mincemeat filling:
Adapted from the Baker’s Field Guide to Christmas Cookies, by Dede Wilson
1 apple, peeled cored, and finely diced
1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter
2 cups packed dark brown sugar
            1 cup raisins
            3/4 cup golden raisins
            3/4 cup dried currants
juice and zest from 1 small lemon
1/4 cup finely diced candied orange peel (Use good quality — I like the stuff I get from http://www.culinarydistrict.com
            )1/4 cup brandy

Make the mincemeat – combine all the ingredients except the brandy in a large saucepan, heat to a boil, turn down the heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in brandy and simmer for 5 more minutes. Let cool to room temperature.

In the Joy of Cooking mock (the no meat version) mincemeat recipe, the main ingredient is tart apples or a mix of apples and green tomatoes.
