Insalata di Mare in Hudson County or nearby?

I'm looking for a restaurant that serves tasty insalata di mare (venetian style). I know this is very specific, but my husband is craving it. There are very few places, surprisingly, that have this to his liking (and from his childhood memories in Italy). We are in Jersey City but can travel. Thanks!

  1. I do not know exactly what Venetian style is....but I can give you two recommendations based on my prior experiences....

First is Di Palma Brothers in North Bergen on Kennedy Boulevard....they have and excellent rendition that costs about $18 the last time I was there this past year. It consisted of real jumbo shrimp, calamari, scungilli, fresh cooked whole clams and mussels in their shells. DiPalma is known for their generous portions and for sharing.. The restaurant has been around for over seven decades and is BYOB.

Second is right in Jersey City....but it comes with a I have heard it was sold to new owners this past year.. Rita and Joe's on Broadway @ Routes 1 & 9. I have not been here in the past couple of years, but this is a place I used to take clients to for dinner. Although the place was very dated, it never failed to impress them with the quality of the food we received. Personally, I do not like pre-made seafood salad, especially if made with any acid. At R & J's, they always made it for me fresh and served warm ( a la Rao's ). I would request their largest shrimp, calamari, pulpo, scungilli, clams and mussels dressed only with olive oil.....and lemons on the side. If they had it available, then I would get any or all in combination. We always sat in the bar and were served by the bartender, who unfortunately, I do not recall his name.....but he was always very friendly and accommodating and always said if the kitchen could make it...they would.

Some prior comments from past threads:

    1. When I lived in Jersey City (up until 5 years ago), I often ate at Casa Dante, and insalata di mare was a frequent choice (if I didn't have time to make my own at home). On Newark Ave, just east of Kennedy Blvd. With their own parking lot.
