Bermuda - Newport Gastropub
It's been a rocky relationship from the opening with lots of ups and downs and hits and misses but finally had a wonderful meal from every dish ordered. Service has never been a major issue, there have been a few lags in getting drinks ordered when they're busy but overall, well done. Attentive without being fussy and the servers are very helpful in describing items from the menu when you're unsure as to what they are (both food and beers/wines).
As to the food, the first time we went (shortly after opening) the DP was extremely disappointed by "The Serious Burger" as the texture was completely off-putting (cat food came to mind). Last night, hit it out of the park. Redemption in a big way. Tried the chicken schnitzel burger which was delicious. Super crunchy panko breaded chicken cutlet, 2 of them (which I thought was overkill but a man would think otherwise). Nice squeeze of lemon noted on the schnitzel which I thought was really nice. My only quibble (but not my DP's) was I found the bun sucked too much moisture out of my mouth when I took a bite. Solved that problem by using the cranberry mayo that was provided. Delicious. As for apps, we were all pretty happy, chicken liver pate, smooth, creamy with that nice hit of boozy deliciousness, steak tartare was divine with the brininess of capers and mixing in the raw quail eggs, served with nice tart cornichons and of course, the poutine with the gravy on the side, nice crunchy, blistered french fries. Small quibble being Canadian, the use of something other than cheese curds which give the nice squeakiness when you chew on it. But understandable given that we are a rather small island in the middle of a vast ocean.
Other hits from other visits, steak frites and the sliders were good, I loved the lamb ribs but I love lamb (which did taste lamb-y).
Overall, I'd say that I'm extremely happy that the Fairmont is upping their game in the restaurant portion of the hotel and will definitely be back.
