Ottawa - Byward market dinner

so far have tried Murray St and frankly dissapointed that the reality was far from the reviews - is it the reviewers knowledge of real charcuterie or did we get the B-team in the kitchen.... looking for more interesting food in the Market - any other suggestions - other than "play"?

  1. I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your meal at Murray Street. What exactly didn't you like about it?...

As for interesting food in the Market are there any types of cuisines you like? Or price point?

the charcuterie was mediocre - no better than what i can buy for myself at the market (and even the grocery stores honestly) the house smoked duck was interesting but that was it. The confit de canard was fine but the chard and spatzle it sat on were dry. Not terrible by any means but ho-hum.

Okay well for what it's worth here are a few suggestions:

Domus Café is good. They focus on seasonal locally sourced items. You can visit their website for the menu:

If you like Mexican there is Ahora or Los Tacos de Mauro.

If you like pub fare I can recommend Chez Lucien. I find their hamburgers to be on the dry side (common in Ottawa) but their Croque Monsieur is to die for.

If you like Indian food I can recommend Café Shafali

I could also highly recommend The Smoque Shack for all things bbq and their side dish of mac 'n cheese is to die for.

There is a new pub in the Byward Market that I confess I haven't been to yet but it is getting good reviews. It's called Brothers Beer Bistro

+1 for Domus. It's my go-to near the Byward Market.

Ask for your Chez Lucien burger medium. It is excellent. And they have the best fries in Canada.

            Going there tomorrow....
