Han Joo - solid new Korean on St. Mark's

  • 1

Just tried this new Korean place on St. Mark's for dinner. Their original location is in Flushing; I haven't tried it, but I thought the food here was just as good as Flushing places like Hahm Ji Bach or Jang Tuh, and better than most of the places on 32nd street. The menu has most of your typical Korean BBQ, hotpot, and entrees, and unusually they cook some of the BBQ items on a "crystal" grill. I'm not sure if it has some special cooking properties or if it's just a gimmick.

We ordered:

"Micro thin" sliced pork belly - generous portion that they cook on the crystal grill. They tilt the grilling surface so the grease runs off, and you can have them grill kimchi downstream from the pork so it soaks up the juices. The pork belly gets nice and crispy like bacon and I personally prefer this style to the thicker cut you usually see in BBQ places. It's served with all the fixings - water kimchi, vinegary sauce, powdery sesame, doenjang (soybean paste), and thinly sliced scallions.

Kalbi - two big strips of kalbi meat cooked with an onion and served with big lettuce leaves. Tender, good quality meat. This plus the pork belly would have really been enough food for the two of us.

Naeng Myun (Korean cold noodles) - this is advertised as a "side" on the BBQ menu, but you get a big portion in a bowl that would be enough for a light lunch. You can choose plain or spicy broth. It comes with hard boiled egg and slices of Korean pear and cucumbers. Very refreshing and the noodles had a great chew to them.

Kimchi stew - I didn't eat much of this because I was getting full, but it wasn't bad - tasted like it usually does.

You get a good amount of side dishes here - I counted nine including a stone bowl of steamed eggs. I only wished we got some kimchi side dishes - we only got it with the pork. Service was attentive and friendly.

Really glad to see a place like this open in the EV! If they keep it up, this will be my go-to Korean place; it'll save me from trekking up to 32nd street or riding the Flushing van.
