Finally a decent Indian restaurant in Victoria
Victoria has always had a lot of Indian restaurants--Da Tandoor, Spicejammer, Sabri's, etc...but none of them have ever been very good. Finally, thankfully, that has changed.
I have dined at Sizzling Tandoor twice, and both times I have thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The flavours and textures and well defined, and the ingredients seem fresh and of good quality. The spice level is low, unless you ask for it to be different, but at least the servers acknowledge that their hot is a "white man's hot" and can adjust the spice accordingly.
Last night I had the kachumber salad, the spinach naan, the tandoor chicken, and the eggplant bharttha. All versions were excellent. Last time my wife and I went we had the rogan josh, and sampled two of the naans (the onion/cilantro and the paneer naan) and the tandoor chicken (which was so good I had to order it again last night). Their rogan josh is also a standout though fairly pricey at $19.
This place reminds me of some of the better Indian restaurants I used to dine at in Toronto.
It is very busy--the first time we waited about 15 minutes to be seated, and last night we went for a drink at a nearby bar because the wait was 45 minutes (we did not have reservations). The service is slow at this point, but the food is worth the wait in my opinion.
The one caveat for some diners is that the restaurant forays into fusion territory with a few of their dishes. I.e. they make a tandoor chicken poutine, a tandoori burger, and a fettucini alfredo with your choice of chicken tikka, tandoori prawns, or tandoori vegetables. I am not interested in those dishes, though I must say that the tandoori chicken poutine does intrigue (sounds like a dish that would end up on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives).
Now if only we could have a decent Cantonese, Szechuan, Hunan, Thai, Malaysian, or Burmese restaurant in Victoria (sigh...)
