Route 66 Hot Dogs,Burgers and Shakes --Long Branch

  • foobuc Oct 17, 2012 08:34 PM

It is located on Route 36 where it turns into Joline Ave. Just past Monmouth Park on the right hand side in a small strip mall. 1950's feel to the inside and it has been open 2 weeks. Tried it on Monday. though i will give you a review it certainly is NOT a John Fox review. Dogs in size were similar to the Windmill in thickness and length. Same consistency as well from the grill. I got one plain to taste it w/o any condiments and then got one with just chili( Much like Mr Fox i don't like onions!). Surprisingly, it was a very Plainfield-style of Chili though maybe not as spicy. Plain dog was about 3.50 and the chili dog was 4.50 w/o the onions. Not sure how it will do as it is a tough area with plenty of competition. It is right on my route so i had to give it a chance.

I'm always too chicken to ask. I just go by taste and if i like it! lol. My friend asked me if it is natural casing or not and i can't even figure out how to tell the difference even though i know what the difference is supposed to be. It def tasted more like a Windmill dog than a max's. Same shape but maybe shorter.

The owner joined our Facebook page, Hot Dog Nation. The dog is a 6/1 Grote & Weigel griddle frank, same as those served at Texas Weiner l in Plainfield, Texas Weiner ll in Greenbrook, J&G, Red Tower, Manny's, and the many places that serve grilled Texas weiners.

Thank hotdoglover. Good to know as i thought they were pretty good!

Max's and Windmill aren't cheap either

    2. Has anyone actually eaten here? It seems a bit pricey for what they're selling but I'm curious.

Not sure if this spot has new ownership, but whoever is running the place sure has confidence in their dogs! they're giving away a free hot dog with no other purchase needed, which seems nuts. I saw it listed on the jersey in motion site which is has some good stuff on it.

Regardless, I had my doubts about the free hot dog, but sure enough its legit. It was a solid dog. A def notch above windmill & Max's... not as good as some dogs I've had outside of NJ.

If youre in the LB area, go get a free dog. I wound up buying a soda as I didnt want to feel too moochie.

As I drove towards Pier VIllage, I mayyyy very well have gone in for dog #2 yesterday. Solid milk shake with it. I guess in a town with Max's around forever, you have to do what you can to get yourself out there.

Max's ? Are they still in business ? Given the nasty way the old lady at the cash register treats customers (who have done nothing wrong to possibly give her just cause to do so), I'm surprised.

Windmill, on the other hand, is a credible and worthy competitor.....especially in nice weather when you can sit on the roof under the windmill blades at the Long Branch store on the corner by the intersection [next to the ice cream stand] and watch the world go by. Decent food too.

Max's? Feh. Not worth it since the joint and crabby lady moved off the boardwalk.
