Malabar Cafe on Soquel in Santa Cruz--weekend closing time?

I'm heading down to Santa Cruz from San Francisco this evening, and am planning to get into town around 9pm. Can anyone tell me what time Malabar Cafe closes on Friday nights? I looked online and called, but coundn't find an answer.
Thanks in advance!

  1. Hope you were able to make it before closing; I don't know their hours at all. I've never eaten at Malabar before but live w/in walking distance, so am curious. It's always very crowded so is popular w/ some locals. If you had a chance to try it, would appreciate hearing your impressions. Thanks!

I was there Sunday night and there were still people waiting for tables when I left around 9:30 pm.

I'm guessing they stop letting new people in around 10 pm.

Malabar is kind of a mixed bag. Many, including me, think it's one of the best vege places anywhere, but others don't like it at all.

Thanks for your response. I'm a meat lover at heart, but I enjoy and take notice of vegetarian food that's done well. What are your favorites at Malabar? Have you ever tried the mostly veggie, Sri Lankan place called Sri (see link)?

My favorites include the Greek salad, salad rolls, and just about any of the curry dishes.

Sunday night they served only a sampler plate with four or five different curries. All were very good.

I like Sri also, but it has a totally different menu than the Malabar. Also, the Malabar has nicer ambience, give or take the owner/manager, who can be quite gruff on occasion.

            Note, Malabar has closed down.
