I haven't been there in years (used to visit my sis when she went to school up there). I remember the buffalo wings being sooo darn good (and the peel and eat cajun shrimp). the kind of wings that are the right combo of spicy/vinegary, yummy. definitely a sinus clearing experience.

are they still good, or perhaps the red nectar is clouding my judgement? I heard they changed ownership... anyway.. am passing through this summer. wanted to know if it is still worth a stop.... after a pint of oatmeal stout and onion strings at the Lost Coast ;)

Humboldt BC changed hands some time ago; the beer is now contract-brewed in central CA (SLO?) and though I haven't tried it in awhile myself word has it that the beer is bad now. I was recently in Arcata and I don't believe there's a brewpub associated with this outfit anymore. I don't think there's a listing for it in the Celebrator either.

BUT while you're up there don't neglect Six Rivers BC in McKinleyville.

ah yes, well, the six rivers is on the agenda for day number 2, after captain zach's crab shack (if it is still there).

I'm not a big fan (or at least not in the past) of the food at six rivers, but the beer is tasty.

up the road on 101 there used to be this funky, dare I say twin-peaksy campground (just north of patrick's point) that you could buy really killer blackberry pie. do you happen to know if that is still there?

I love the Lost Coast breweing company. The Downtown Brown and the Indica are among my favorite beers of all time.

And they have pretty good wings too.

But if you want the best ever the Rubicon in Sacramento has them all beat.

Humboldt Brewery has changed hands and more's the pity. It doesn't brew its own beer anymore and the menu has suffered.
Captain Zach's is in McKinleyville on Central Ave. about a block from Murray Road. So glad it's on your list. Six Rivers Brewery in McK has changed ownership and the beer is great. They've been working on their menu too.
I believe the campground with the blackberry pies you refer to is the Little Red School House Campground and RV Park at Dry Lagoon, and it is indeed up the road from Patrick's Point State Park and it is still there and improving. (Somehow they have also bribed the local elk herd to hang out in the front meadow and sometimes even on the highway, much to the delight of the tourists.)
Rolf's Restaurant, which used to be up 101 next to the road to Gold Bluffs Beach, has relocated to the Red School House's big barn and should be open for business by Father's Day. You can get real schnitzel there as well as elk, buffalo, ostrich and other more exotic meats, done a number of ways.
Happy traveling!

I went to high school in Arcata and fled from the area for college, so my partying days happened elsewhere. I'm not a beer fan, but went to Lost Coast Brewery when I returned for a visit several years ago. Their wings are pretty good and really spicy!

Don't know the current status of Humboldt Brewery, but give us an update if you find out. Linked below is the Humbrewers Guild website. Scroll down for links to local breweries. Humboldt Brewery is listed but the website is either defunct or under construction. Beyond Lost Coast and Six Rivers (McK), there's Eel River (Fortuna) and Mad River (Blue Lake). Humboldt folks seem to like beer. Mad River in Blue Lake doesn't have a pub, but looks like they have a store and give tours. Blue Lake also has a relatively new casino which is supposed to have a decent and ridiculously cheap seafood buffet on Fri. Have fun, and ahem, drive safely!

thanks for the info! I'll check it out and report back... though it may not be for a couple months. we're still hammering out the details of our trip.

btw... since you are from the area... up the road on 101 there used to be this funky, dare I say twin-peaksy campground (just north of patrick's point) that you could buy really killer blackberry pie. do you happen to know if that is still there?

and btw.. don't worry, we have a designated driver. ;)

Twin Peaks-ish is dead on! That's exactly how my husband described the area after he visited for the first time.

I know nothing of the campground or blackberry pies of which you inquire. Sounds intriguing, but my parents didn't let me wander too far as a teen girl. Plus my mom made her own pies from the blackberry bush that grew wild 50 ft. away from our house. Mmmm...

The Arcata Co-op and Wildberries markets both in Arcata have great local products and baked goods. I remember loving the carrot cake from the co-op. Cypress Grove dairy farm is also based in Humboldt and is well known for their Humboldt Fog and Midnight Moon cheeses (see link). Have a great trip!
