Fresh Tarragon Bunches: Where to get in SF?

briansf Oct 16, 2012 06:22 PM

Hi All,

Does anyone know where I can get bunches of fresh tarragon in SF? Safeway, TJ's and Whole Paycheck only have the clamshell packages of less than 1oz, and I need quite a bit to make a tarragon based sauce.

Tarragon is a spring herb and you are going to be hard-pressed to find large bunches beyond those clamshell ones.

You might consider calling Morningsun Herbs in Vacaville, but that one will be a long shot, at best.

@CarrieWas218 - thanks for the reply! I think I'll have to go with the clamshells then.. I'd burn more $ in gas heading up to Vacaville. :)

Just curious, what kind of recipe calls for more than an ounce of tarragon? Or are you just making a huge amount?

I'm attempting to make the "secret sauce" that Le Entrecôte puts on their steak :)

I'm not from SF, but in San Diego there is abundant tarragon to be found at any Persian market - it is a big component of Sabzi (a Persian staple) so you'll almost always find some there.

Ahh, San Diego. How I wish I could return. Thanks for the tip, for when I get back for good! What neighbourhoods can I find the Persian markets?

In San Diego, Balboa International Market is the best.

But I meant that as a general tip - I'm sure that any big Persian market in SF is going to have Tarragon :)

I'm not sure there is a Persian market in SF. Samiramis has some Persian stuff but I don't think they have produce.

You might check 22nd & Irving Market.

Other Avenues--Judah-Outer Sunset btwn 44 and 45th has fresh tarragon on the shelf.

Yes, worth checking 22nd and Irving (though I didn't see notice tarragon on Saturday).
Also, Taraval Parkside Farmer's Market -btwn 15th and 16th.
                    and, as mentioned, call Rainbow

Anyone spotted big bunches recently in SF? Best I've been able to find is at Royal Market in the Richmond District, and it was $2.99 each for the last ~1.8oz bunches they had. Smaller bunches weren't looking good and I need another 4 oz.

small bunches of tarragon at the Produce Market on Geary Blvd. at 4th Avenue - with the greens/herbs in the back next to the eggs

I saw bunches at the Alemany Farmers Market on Saturday. They have large bunches of herbs for fairly cheap (got a huge bunch of basil and mint for $1 each).

I believe Rainbow sells these in larger bunches, or at least not in the little plastic packs. They tend to have lots of fresh herbs that I have a hard time finding elsewhere, including chervil and sorrel.

Thanks, that's what I went with! The bunches at Rainbow are $1.39 for 1.1oz and have decent sized leaves.
