Done with Great Wall at 45th & France and need a new chow mein joint

  • 4

Great Wall has been my go-to joint for chow mein for years. [Their "Great Wall Chow Mein with chicken and cashews.] Ordered that tonight and the beef and broccoli. In both dishes, the meat was atrocious. I must be late on this news because the restaurant was empty.

Where else is a good place to go that is convenient to Lowry Hill / Uptown, with easy in-and-out parking?

  1. I can't vouch for the chow mein at First Wok on West Lake Street (same complex as Punch Pizza, next door to Tel Aviv), but think that their food is good for what it is (i.e., "traditional" Chinese restaurant cuisine). It's been our "go-to" place for years for this style of Chinese.

Thanks, Bob. I haven't been there in years but will give it a try.

    2. I feel like KinhDo on Hennepin fits the bill pretty well. Even though it's "Vietnamese," it's a pretty solid American Chinese menu. Plus Pad Thai, for some reason. I can't vouch for their chow mein specifically, but the rest of the food is pretty good. One grain of salt - I haven't been there in a while, since I moved out of Uptown.

You know something? I've developed kind of a loyalty to this place. Had the lunch specials a few times and they were nothing. But, consistently good take-out. Love the pad thai, love their special fried rice. Like the younger guy that works the front register. This was sort of my conclusion: Why venture off the Kihndo ranch? [Because I wanted chow mein. I'll have to give Kihndo's a shot.]

Guess I'm colored by living in this area so long. Kihndo has been there so long. But my sense is that it's under new ownership the last few years.

The egg rolls are really great!
