Kosher Dim Sum

  1. My wife makes wonderful dim sum. Of course, not in as much variety as a dim sum restaurant.

    1. Thanks Rockycat. I'm going to email the company and see if they can get them to my area. I don't live in NY or California, but I have purchased their noodle products locally.

      1. Just to clarify - those are really just spring rolls/egg rolls (Chả giò in Vietnamese), not really Dim Sum per se. I see that Twin Marquis is marketing them as such - and it's cool that it's a prepared food. TM does excellent products in general and I'm very happy that they are OU and readily available.

        I would be great to see kosher varieties of Tai Pao/Bánh bao and cheung fan.

          Agreed. I got very excited at the idea of dim sum items, and was disappointed to see that it's something that I can already find elsewhere with a hechsher, although I hope that these will be better than others available on the market.

            You're absolutely right.

            In fact, I did a double-take when I saw "kosher dim sum" since most dim sum items use pork ("char-siu bao"), shrimp ("har-gau") or a combination of the two ("siu-mai").

              Some contain both pork and shrimp, along with crab. I call that the Triple Treif Special.

            Currently we don't make Kosher Dim Sum anymore, but you could try our
            kosher noodles and wrappers.

              That's really too bad. I just copied that link yesterday. It would be nice of them to take down the information, then. I liked the idea of the samosa, myself, even though I don't live anywhere near any of the stores listed. I still like their noodles, though. It helps make a mean beef chow mein.

                I'm disappointed too. I grew up eating microwavable veggie bao. They're not quite as good as the fresh deal but still great to have on hand.

                  easy enough to make bau on your own, with your favorite pareve white bread recipe and a bamboo steamer. We fill ours with beef or veal in non-smokey bbq sauce or hoisin, if we can find a kosher variant.

                    I've made my own. It's too much effort each time for a quick snack. I wonder how well they'd freeze.

                      should be fine, but can get freezer burn if not well sealed. I've bought commercial frozen bao, if you prefer the steamed type they reheat in the microwave ok (tent them in a damp paper towel or the dough gets rubbery) but if you prefer the baked version anyway...

              3. My favorite Chinese restaurant, Wing Wan, in West Hempstead, NY, has got to have the tastiest Dim Sum that I've ever had. Every time I go to their restaurant, I order 1 or two (one for later at home). My ex loved their Dim Sum, too. But then again, I've only eaten kosher, so I wouldn't know what a good treif Dim Sum tastes like.

                  Dim Sum is a category of food, not a particular dish; think of it as the tapas of the Chinese world. A dim sum meal is a bunch of small dishes, rather than a main plus side dishes. There's a bunch of recipes commonly prepared for dim sum. I have no idea what Wing Wan is offering as 'dim sum,' but it's not a dim sum meal.
