Tashmoo "pop up" Beer Garden in downtown [DTW]
Went to Tashmoo Beer Garden (TBG) today, based on berkleybabe's rec from when it was held last year. Yes, with my kindergartener. Fortunately, he wasn't the only youngster and he had a blast with the bean bag toss game and with a stray football. TBG is a tent set up in a residential open lot not far north of Jefferson, east of Belle Isle. Parking was fine and the mp3 selections were great, unless you were a neighbor with a napping baby.
The vibe is oriented towards 28 yr olds, but at 1pm Sunday the average age may have been over 40. Corridor Sausage and People's Pierogi Cooperative were keeping people well fed (or, in the case of Treat Dreams, keeping people too well fed).
But, the focus was the keg beer: Arcadia Whitsun, Founders Dirty B*stard & Breakfast Stout, Bell's Porter, MCBW Oktoberfest, North Peak Nomad Cider, Atwater Grand Circus IPA, Short's Bellaire Brown, Livery Steel Wheels Oat Stout, Dragonmead Eric the Red, Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela & Calabaza Golden. I had the Livery Oat Stout which was nice, but went straight to my brain, I would have liked to also imbibe a Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela, but given that I was driving my kid and there was a television crew* filming there, sense somehow prevailed. *DPTV's Under The Radar Michigan with Tom Daldin--good show, by the way.
TBG goes next Sat/Sun, too. EVERYBODY there was having a mellow, pleasurable time. May not be some people's cup of tea, particularly clean freaks. There aren't really handwashing facilities, and my table top was made from a door recovered from a nearby demolished home which had mold damage. So, as juicy kraut fell off my kid's bratwurst, onto the "table," I had to continually remind him not to pick it up and eat it.
Hey, it's all good, though. May be back next weekend. errr, I might add that the Black folk from the surrounding area weren't really interested in checking out what was going on, but it's still probably helpful to get suburbanites and Detroiters at least crossing one anothers' paths, even if they're not actively interacting. I wish Tashmoo the best.
Glad you went...due to circumstances had to miss the whole deal this year. As I said, last year with my son and his girlfriend, a gorgeous fall day - was one of the highlights of the year. (Even got framed pix for Xmas.) Way fun playing Candy Land while sipping good brew with your tablemates.
Glad you brought VTB jr. Hope they'll open next year. maybe we'll meet there?
