Camarones ahogados at Mariscos Cancun, Thousand Oaks
After getting acquainted with this dish over the years at Mariscos Chente, I was really glad to see it at a more local (for me) spot, which does a really good version. I actually prefer this version to Chente, though I fully acknowledge that Chente is a awesome seafood restaurant and snookery. And, I *don't* claim this version is in any way superior in freshness, preparation or taste, just that I prefer it personally.
The half order is around 15-20 shrimp, peeled and deveined (different from Chente, which requires a bit of hand work). The sauce is green chile based rather than red, free of garlic salt (a pet peeve of mine at a lot of places), and comes with the expected slices of avocado, tomato, plus some seriously hot jalapeno salsa, made somewhat creamy so maybe with a bit of avocado. Photo attached.
Other dishes at Cancun are fine, but the seafood appears to be the real stand-out. They even start with a complementary cup of spicy clam soup. I don't eat tilapia and aside from salmon and halibut on the menu which I assumed are farmed/frozen, resp. (just based on price), there's really only one other fish I'd want to eat here, which they're calling "red snapper". I didn't see what species it actually is, but I'll try to order it next time and report back. They have lobster at a respectable $32 a plate so that might be worth a try too.
Hey, you can even pick up those good buns at Han's a few doors down afterward!

WOW...you're on a roll, cant talk...eating! This is great sleuthing in an area that is strewn with chains.
We have eaten there several times, if it is the place that I am thinking it might be. I just don't remember the name of it, but I do remember the complimentary spicy clam soup; I like that a lot!
I once had a shrimp dish quite like the one you are describing. My recollection is that the flavor was really good, but that the dish was too spicy to enjoy. I like spice, but I don't want to focus all of my attention on trying to cool down before the next bite. However, with your post now, I will try it again!
