Rt 95 between Richmond and Savannah and back????

Motosport Oct 10, 2012 09:16 AM

Any interesting "MUST TRY" restaurants not too far off Rt 95??
I know this is vague but I am planning a round trip road trip and want to experience local places and avoid Denny's!!
I am open for most anything except for fine dining fancy schmancy places.

How far off is not too far?

I don't know about "MUST TRY", but Summerton Diner is nice. And call Mc Cabe's barbeque in Manning to see if they are open. They are my second favorite barbeque place in SC and not far off 95.

I requested this post be moved to the Southeast forum. You'll get (a LOT) more responses there.

Many thanks!! I guess 15 minutes each way is reasonable. I do have a schedule but it's not too tight.
McCabes is already on my list.

If you put "I95" in the searchbox you'll get all kinds of interesting suggestions.

Parker's barbecue in Wilson NC is about 15 minutes off 95. I like their barbecue and love their fried chicken. If you are pressed for time, Moore's barbecue in Kenly is a few miles farther south of Wilson, serves the same style of barbecue and fried chicken, and is only about 1/4 mile off 95.

In addition to McCabes, there's another bbq place in Manning called D&H. Same style. McCabes might be a little better, but D&H is a good alternative, given the odd hours of many little bbq joints.

If you want to try mustard-style SC barbecue, and can overlook the owner's politics, there's a branch of Maurice's right off 95 in the middle of SC.

Is Maurice Bessinger the same person and owner of Bessingers BBQ in Charleston?

No. Bessingers in Charleston is owned by Maurice's brother and the brothers sons. I do not believe they share Maurice's political views, at least not publicly.

If you are traveling on Thurs - Sun. and willing to spend a 1/2 hour going east you should try Blackbeards BBQ & C-Food in Tarboro. This is east of Rocky Mount in The N. part of NC.
Every thing I've had is excellent and their bbq is done with wood. The Sun.hours are shorter.
