what's wrong with my apple?

Any thoughts on what's happening in the middle of my apple here? It was the only one like this in a basket full of northern spies. First time I've seen something like this in any apple!

It looks like it may have frozen in the center...

I wouldn't know how, but it looks somewhat like when a cuke freezes. It's the same appearance..

I watched a news segment last night concerning freezes during apple blossoming season in much of North America last spring. The harvest will be low this year, and apple prices may spike as much as $1/lb. Perhaps yours are displaying wounds from earlier in the year.

Definitely a possibility, Veggo- this freezing during apple blossoming season affected my area. It stinks - and it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the apple. A few orchards near me couldn't offer pick-your-own this year because of it. Apple cider is going for $8 a gallon in my area. Ouch! At least the pumpkins are safe!

          Sugar core?

          Edited to add:

Found a pic of sugar core/honey core:

Basically a change in the starch storage, if I understand correctly. Doesn't affect eatability.
