dinner before jcc-sf event

We have tickets for a series of events this year @ the San Francisco JCC. Always looking for dinner before-hand.

Before one recent performance, we ate @ Garibaldi's on a friend's recommendation--found it pricey for the perfectly good, but not great fare, and a kind of botox-ed feel.

Last night, ate @ the cafe in the JCC--cheap, but pretty terrible (how can a kitchen in a place like a JCC make inedible hummus and baba ganoush, both as easy to make well [if not brilliantly] as it is to boil water.)

Perused this Board. Based on that, made a res @ Sociale this time, more of a walk, though (if I'm reading maps correctly) not too far.

Interested in hearing more re food/ambiance there. What's esp. good to order?

And any new recommendations for future pre-event meals in that area? Thanks!

  1. I love Sociale, it's set back from the street. You have to go through a little passageway between the buildings and then you enter their charming little courtyard. If you prefer to eat inside the restaurant is small and cozy too. I think it's a very romantic spot. I love the duck pasta. The menu is pretty straight forward in the Cal-Ital style.

For a more casual or quicker option Cafe Rigolo is also close by. Spruce is also in that neighborhood but it at the more expensive end of the scale, but they have a bar menu for lighter meals.

    1. Osteria (on the southeast corner of Presidio & Sacramento) is a reliable Italian place, with reasonable prices. Eliza's (on California west of Divisadero) is good for Chinese.

I enjoy Osteria, tho I haven't been there in a while. Not a destination, but a great neighborhood resto just across the street from the JCC. Cheerful interior, and as DT said, reliable.
