[Woodley, Stockport] Taylor's

It’s good to come across a decent chippy almost on the doorstep. And Taylors is most definitely a decent chippy – a recent regional finalist in the national Fish & Chip Shop of the Year awards. There’s a spotlessly clean cafe area and cheery staff – and you can’t always say that about places.

Cod was freshly cooked. A tad oily perhaps. And a tad overcooked. But only a tad in both cases. This was tasty fish in a lovely light crisp batter.

Chips were absolutely bang-on for everything you’d ever want from a chippy chip.

And the mushy peas were not too mushy, still retaining quite a bit of identifiable texture.

This usually costs £5.50. But there was an offer on. For a bargain fiver, they throw in a dessert. Now there isn’t a great range of desserts. And you have to like apple as it comes in the form of apple pie, apple crumble or blackberry and apple crumble. We went with the blackberry & apple. OK, it was bit gloopy – much as you’d expect in the works canteen (for those of you old enough to remember when we had “works” ), Needless to say, it comes with custard. Lashings of it.

Was the crumble battered?! And did they wrap it in paper?

The custard was battered, of course.
