New DC Restaurants - the definitive (?) list

  • 8

With a group of fellow food lovers, I've been trying to sample every new restaurant in DC (places opening now or opened in the last few months). It is a daunting task; literally every day, some new project or opening is announced. Although many of these places won't survive, I truly think this is a golden age of dining in DC.

I hope this list will be of use to anyone looking for something new and different. And if you see anything I've missed, want to add some details, or are excited about anything in particular, please jump in!

Forgot them, thanks. Have you been? It is in the former Shwarma King space, right?

      1. re: firstbitedc

Right. Haven't yet been to the AdMo location, but liked their Leesburg spot (I really liked the feel of their Leesburg spot - had that mini-biergarten feeling). I didn't care for their flatbread that they used (it had "ridges"), but otherwise thought it was good, and something you don't see here in DC. I'll probably check them out this weekend.

    2. Wow, this is great!

      Also consider:

I've added a lot to this list in the last month - it's amazing how many restaurants have opened or are opening in DC in 2012. And there's more to come, I hear. My food-loving friends and I are still on a mission to eat at every one, but it's tough. (Not that I'm complaining!) Anyone want to join us? And what are we missing?

      2. Tash -- Farsi for "flame" -- is open three months now, and we had a great lunch there yesterday. It is stylish and outdoor seating is nice (and no chintzy plastic chairs, but quality heavy duty, contemporary and orange! molded plastic, at modern-style chrome and wood-slatted tables). Inside it is a wood and earth color scheme - with a series of mod brown and orange pendant bulbous composite plastic lamps, a nicely designed wooden floor, a bar made of small cut wood logs ends, and a large scale wallpaper that looks like mosaic tiles from Iran. Through the large glass front of the restaurant space, the inside opens up (literally) toward the street by nearly the width of the interior space. We sat indoors, and there are wooden booths and tables options. (This opening is the only one where I can see a wheelchair-bound person being able to get inside the restaurant. So, for winter? You're out of luck. ADA anyone? How did this pass code? Could the front glass wall of the restaurant be considered the "handicapped accessible entrance"? I didn't see the bathrooms -- typically another issue for my handicapped friends).

        OK, for the food!

We started with the chopped salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, parsley and pomegranate seeds (probably mint, too, though that was subtle) -- very much like the Lebanese fattoush (without the toasted pita). The seeds were not the fat & juicy pomegranate seeds from poms in season, but rather more like the smaller, harder and less succulent ones you can buy in the grocery store's produce section in plastic clamshells. The salad dressing was a straightforward lemon vinaigrette, and well-balanced in acidity and oil.

The lamb chops were moist, tender, beautifully cooked and the taste was perfectly "lamb." The hint of smokiness from the grill was subtle and wonderful. Good chop value @ 4 for $18 which includes dill rice (supposedly dill and lima rice, but I only spotted one or two limas). The dish is served with a spiced yogurt dip and a tabbouleh made with couscous (not bulgur, as usual). The yogurt sauce was straightforward, and tasty, but the tabbouleh was dry and boring (but useful to add to my dill rice).

We also ordered two side grilled veggies, eggplant (dry and mallowy) and roasted peppers (the small red and yellow baby bell peppers you can get in the grocery stores these days). These peppers were wonderful -- nicely charred and naturally sweet -- a great accompaniment to the lamb. I wished I'd had some olive oil to put on the eggplants, as their dryness cried out for a dose. (They skewered the eggplant through the middle -- using the small, long dark-skinned eggplants. This was unexpected, as typically eggplant is sliced and then grilled on its side, so the flesh gets the direct heat -- and smoke -- exposure. I'd recommend that they change their current technique and go for the traditional way -- where the eggplant gets more flavor and is moister (due to a marinade or simply olive oil and salt). The skin was also very leathery on these eggplants. I would not order them again if they are prepared the same way. The peppers? In a heartbeat! Veggie sides are $5 each.

There was also a tomato sauce which was **delicious**, and I'm not sure if it came with the main dish or with the veggies. I do know we could've eaten much more of that. (These sauces and condiments are in small bowls -- like ¼ C). (If they will sell you some to take home, buy it. I'm kicking myself for not asking!).

Near the end of our meal, we were offered some hot flatbread from the oven. It was tasty -- tender and mildly yeasty. I wish they had offered it at the beginning of the meal. (We did not order any appetizer that had the bread, so the only starch WITH the meal was our rice). I think some bread for the table included as part of the entree would be nice. (To compare another Persian place, Amoo in McLean gives you bread and a hot peppery relish, for the table, when you sit down).

Coffee was French Press style and the sugar cubes came in a tiny stainless martini-shaped container, along with some almond brittle (flavored with cardamom and saffron?). A nice little finish to a very satisfying meal.

We also had a very good Pinot Noir from Sonoma Valley -- smooth and complex @ $11/glass. (It is the first one listed under Reds on the wine list).

Soon they are opening the second floor for noodles and sushi (!!). They will also have above that the rooftop terrace (yay). Sorry, no elevator for those who need it, but we were told that if you have accessibility issues, you can order food from the noodles and sushi menu to be served there on the ground floor. (I'd say getting in the main door entrance would be near impossible for someone in a wheelchair, because of the layout of the two doors (each one in turn opening toward the incoming patron) at right angles -- and the small, small space. Bad design choice there). I assume the doors have to open outward because of the commercial space -- fire safety and all -- but this is ridiculous the way Tash chose to set up their entry. Also, where will people stand if there is a wait to be seated? Linger inside by the front booths and block those people in? Or stand outside in the elements?).

Good food, nice decorating scheme, crummy layout if you care about handicapped people.
