Birthday dinner help- Monday in Nov- Central NJ

I need help, 'Hounds!

My husband and I have birthdays a day apart and usually spend the weekend celebrating. This year is a big one for me, so we're throwing a small party at Elements that Saturday night. But I need to find someplace to celebrate the Husband's birthday dinner, just the two of us, that Monday.

If it wasn't a Monday, we'd be at Nicholas. But it's a Monday and they're closed. As is Ninety Acres. And the new Ryland Inn.

So my current options are Daryl in New Brunswick and the Pluckemin Inn.

I'm also thinking potentially about Ursino, but I hear the service is uneven and it can get loud. And at the moment the menu isn't wowing me.

We've been to the Bernards Inn and Peacock Inn, but for various reasons, those are out. Any place that uses the fake candles on the table is out (Stage Left and most of New Brunswick falls into this category.) I don't really want to go to Montclair. I don't want some place so loud that I'm going to leave with a headache.

Money's not a consideration. I'd like to only travel about an hour from Somerset/Princeton/New Brunswick.

Thoughts? Helpful hints? Have I already got the best options around?

My thanks in advance!

  1. I was going to suggest Rat's, but they appear to be closed on Mondays. Have you considered One 53 in Rocky Hill or Eno Terra in Kingston? Both are open Monday.

    1. Scalini Fedeli in Chatham, NJ is very nice for celebrations. If you make reservations in advance and ask the restaurant to do something nice for a birthday, they might surprise you with a chef-special dessert or something. They did for me a little over a year ago. The food is spectacular. It's the full hour drive from Princeton, but it's pretty easy to get to from Somerset. The Short Hills Mall is 5 mins away if you want to stop to do some mutual gift-buying.
