International Hounds Chowmeeting in NYC, Part 3 - Casa Mono

By the time we reached Part 3 of our short weekend Chowmeet, Fourseason and I have used up 2 of our meal slots on French or Pseudo-French food. For the remaining one, we both agreed before hand to exclude all Asian food from our selection criteria. With limited good restaurants opening on Sunday, our pick of Casa Mono seemed like a no brainer.

We arrived at the restaurant around 12:40 and by 1:00, the place was packed. Once we were seated, the heaven started to open up! Somehow, the rain always follow me every time I ate there??!! Be it before, during or after! How Weird??!!

Since Fourseason is a lover of seafood and we did not manage to get a place at either Le Bernadin or Marea, we tried to focus our CM order on 'Aqua-products'! The plates we ordered for sharing were:

- Pan con Tomate
- Jamon Iberico
- Fried Oysters with Piquillo Sofrito and Black Pepper Crema
- Sepia with Salsa Verde
- Head on Shrimp with Gazpacho and Yellow Cucumbers
- Baby Squid with Local Corn Grits and Farmer's Egg
- Scallops with Canteloupe and Pine Nut Oil
- Atlantic Calamares with Harissa and Squid Ink
- Mussels with Cava and Chorizo
- Beef Tongue with Marrow Broth and Barley

Overall, the food were still pretty good but somehow not as great as my previous few visits. Time to skip Spanish food for a while??!! Biggest disappointment was the unavailability of the Razor Clams a la Plancha, which is my favourite dish and which I was hoping to order for Fourseason to try!
Apart from the always great Sepia, this time, kudos can be given to the Scallops, Head-on Shrimps and the Beef Tongue. The shrimp head, with all the yummy cholesterol laden brain was sooo good and the beef tongue was fork tender with a great aromatic and delicious broth. As always, the plate of good quality sweet Jamon Iberico at $25 was very good value!!

And so, our annual chowmeet came to an end!!

Before heading back to Toronto, I grab a cab and headed down to Russ & Daughters in the hope of getting some Smoked Salmon and Fish Roe for my kids. I was stunned to find a looooong line stretching out onto the street! I took a 'wait' number only to find there were 36 numbers in front of me!! Needing to get back to the hotel for my shuttle, I have no choice but to make an abrupt turn!. So, I wasted $40 on cab fares and achieved nothing!! Sigh!!

  1. Next time, consider trying Txikito, if you haven't been there before.

    1. Sounds like you hit Russ & Daughters right before one of the Jewish High Holy Days--I learned many years ago to avoid R&D before the holidays (I had an hour wait to place my holiday order). Other days the wait at R&D is never that bad.

      BTW, I'm loving your reports! Now that Momofuku has opened in Toronto, I'm thinking about a visit, and I'll be researching your reports from Toronto.

        Thank you for your kind words! I love German Riesling, Per Se and EMP as well. Looks like we have a few things in common!!
