Ess a Bagel. About 2 blocks away, on Third Avenue. Google the exact cross street. Good bkfst options, crowded small tables, self service, but a great option for midtown. Most other spots in that area are none too good and well overpriced. Have fun.

Ess-A-Bagel, Esssssspecially if you are from out of town. They have some of the best bagels in Manhattan and excellent smoked fish and cream cheeses. It's a short walk to 3rd Ave.
              Ess-A-Bagel = Eat a bagel in Yiddish.

When I lived in the 'hood and my parents would visit I'd take them to Brasserie. Not super cheap but cheaper than Waldorf. Great for breakfast.
