Umami Burger Coming to Old Town Pasadena & Other Pasadena News

I was driving through Old Town today and noticed a sign where Naganag Ramen used to be (did not even know they closed). The sign said that Umami Burger is coming soon.
Also, noticed that there is a BJs being put in at the NW corner of Paseo Colorado building on Marengo/Colorado.
One more thing, apparently, Tonny's now delivers.

  1. Noticed yesterday that Norma's Tacos (on Green a couple of blocks west of PCC) is totally gone. It was there last week when I drove by. Wonder if the property owners are pulling the same thing they pulled several years ago with the hugely-missed Las Ruinas.
Also, Nine & Nine Thai is moving form it's current location mid-block on Colorado between Oak Knoll and Hudson to the corner of that same block - Oak Knoll & Colorado into the space that formerly was a flower shop and then a sandwich shop.

Have you been to the new Cousins Lobster Shop in Old Town yet?

      1. re: orythedog

No! I try to do as little as humanly possible in Old Town and have been succeeding quite well. Have you tried it?

      2. re: WildSwede

I read somewhere (can't find my original source) that Norma's was moving. Nevertheless, over on their Yelp page, someone posted: "As of 9/30/12, they will no longer be at their current location. They are moving to 950 E. Colorado Blvd in Pasadena (right next to Subway)."

Ugh! This is going to make parking there even worse when I want to have lunch at the Thai place that used to be named PresidenTwo (name is just now escaping me) Something Mango, I think or when I want to go to Europane.

I walked in this past weekend and asked for a to go menu. They are still being printed. The space good looking. A lounge with couches on one side and a dining room and bar on the other. Fresh seafood from Maine delivered every week. Can't wait to try it.

Sounds great - maybe I will need to break my vow of staying away from OT and go! Thanks!

        2. Lots of intel. I hope the arrival of Umami is good news. I tend to think Umami's appeal was greater when there were just 2-3 locations that you had to make an effort to get to. We'll see. Their outlet at The Grove is very upscale.

Umami's Thousand Oaks outpost, although not upscale, is very VERY good! I have been only once and the chili pepper burger I had was rich and decadent!

What makes the Grove branch upscale? What are we in the Conejo Valley missing out on?

              1. re: mc michael

                Thanks, mc michael!
                It's very nice, indeed!

                1. re: liu

I guess they wanted to raise their game for The Grove. And to sell Truffle Burgers.

              2. re: liu

I've only been to the Los Feliz location once. I had the Hatch Burger which was good. But the Truffle Fries knocked my socks off!

            1. As long as we're just posting general Pasadena info., we had dinner at local favorite Noir Food & Wine last Friday. They have recently introduced a new fall menu, but what is more noteworthy than the addition of new seasonal offerings is the fact that they are moving away from the small plates concept that has been in place since it opened. Several menu favorites are still there (listed either as appetizers or sides), but the main course-sounding dishes are now main course size. They're accordingly a few dollars more; however, our bill the other night was about $20 less than we usually spend because we didn't have to order as much food (the higher main course prices were not high enough to offset the amount we'd spend on extra dishes).

so as long as it's general...wondering if the Stone Brewing Co. that's opening in the same complex as Luggage Room/La Grande L'Orange/Kimagure Sushi will have a bistro attached to it like in San Diego or will it just be for beer tasting? Also noticed something new being built in the old michael chiarello store next to Williams Sonoma. Exciting time for food in Pasadena.

                1. re: trolley

The former Napa Style space is now a branch of Lemonade, and has been for several months now (maybe as long as a year).

                  1. re: Jack Flash

ok, then i'm thinking of another space. will drive by later today with more details on my inquiry.

                  2. re: trolley

The Stone Brewing tasting room is open now. No food, just tastings and growler fills. Not much room to sit either. My boyfriend said there are 6-7 beers on tap at a time.
Luggage room is supposed to be expanding in that complex as well. Not to make more room in the restaurant, but another area and oven to fire pizzas to accomodate for more takeout from what I understand.

                  3. re: Jack Flash

Good move for Noir, I think. I still like the possibility of getting a smallish portion of something rich and lovely, but we usually are dining when we go there and sometimes you want a nice plate of food. We've not been in a long time - slim pickin's for Mrs. O now that she's off animals - but I'm ready to go back any time. That was my first choice for a family dinner tonight, but it can be noisy and Ma-in-law is too old for that, so we'll settle for Cheval Bland, I mean Blanc …

                  4. In other burgers and Old Town news, I noticed when I was driving down Raymond last night that a Slater's 50/50 is going to open in the area

                    1. A, what else?, Grilled Cheese restaurant is going into the last available slot on the corner of Union/Hill in the same building as Dog Haus. The sign says the name is Melt It! - A Grilled Cheese Co.! coming Fall 2012.
Also, there is signage up for a new Vietnamese Restaurant "Pasadena Vietnamese(?) & Grill" in the same shopping center as the Vons on Sierra Madre & Coloardo. The sign says Pho and I was excited to try it last night, but I pulled in, parked, got out of my car and only then realized that it is still in its "coming soon" phase. I think they should not put up the sign until they are open!! Would save me a lot of frustration!! ;-)

Pasadena Noodle & Pho is the name of that forthcoming venture. It's been "coming soon" for a while now, but there does seem to be progress every so often.

I'm trying to picture a vacancy in the Dog Haus building - it must be between DH and that pathetic Gandolfo's place (I went there once; it made me very sad).

                        1. re: Jack Flash

                          Thanks, Jack!
Yeah, it's funny, when I was writing the post, I was trying to picture exactly which slot it was and could not remember!! That's why I wasn't too specific. What I know for sure - it is not on either of the ends! ;-)

                          1. re: WildSwede

it's in the middle. in between the dog haus and the deli place.
