Queen and Spadina Le Gourmand?

Lamanda Sep 27, 2012 12:05 PM

I've walked by a few times this week and their doors are closed an locked. No signs indicating closure, but it doesn't look good. Anyone know anything?

  1. justxpete Sep 27, 2012 12:50 PM

A called placed to their number last week revealed that they were under-going renovations.

Le Gourmand is one of my favourite coffee shops. I was actually on my way there 2 weeks ago, when i saw they were closed. So I went into Starbucks, which is right beside Le Gourmand to see if they knew anything, and they didn't. But it seemed odd to them. They said that they were open one day, and the doors were locked the next. I have to admit that it seems odd to me as well. If they are undergoing renovations, why isn't there a sign on the door?

You would think they would say something...since they all ready went out of business once. Why have people thinking it happened again with the new owners?

Exactly. That's why I think that they've gone out of business. It just seems too coincidental.

Someone's asked on their FB page -- they say they're rehiring staff and may open next week...

I just went to their twitter page, and they swear that they're "re-opening soon".

Then put up a sign for your clientelle. Completely ridiculous or a lie? Wonder which one.

Either way, it says a lot about them IMO!

I agree with you justsayn...100%. If they are just renovating, which it doesn't look like they are, because I've walked by...why not put a sign up on the door? Also, according to the people @ Starbucks, they seemed to close really suddenly. It all just seems very suspicious to me. Especially given what happened @ their Yonge/Eglinton location.

Just went back on Twitter and they say that they're re-opening the middle of next week. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I, personally, am not holding my breath, although I am keeping my fingers crossed that they are.

Yeah -- I've got my hopes up now, but I walked by again this morning and they've done nothing in there. There's a coat of dust on the piled up furniture.

                                Renovating their financing maybe?

Either way, get off the couch and stop tweeting and put a sign on your door for the people who are trying to shop there. So arrogant.

I so totally agree...with everything you just said. In terms of your comment on their finances, money has to be what this is about.

The Spadina location was closed suddenly too but it was purchased by a new owner and subsequently re-opened. So this is deja vu on Spadina.

It's so odd. Their food is so good and the atmosphere is awesome, and it's always packed in there. Why do they continue to have so many problems?

The store was never closed for renovations. It was initially closed for 2 days over the long weekend to repair the plumbing. However the lease expired that same weekend and new terms had not been reached yet. The landlords leasing agent decided to lock the doors without notice until a new lease agreement had been finalized. The employees and owners have not been allowed access therefore unable to post anything on the window. Especially since nobody knew what the outcome would be. It was hoped for the closure to only take a few days but legal issues are never that easy to resolve. We are very sorry for any inconvinience but it has been out of our hands. Stay tuned to twitter and Facebook for updates.

Thanks for the update - we collectively panic every time the doors close temporarily. Maybe time to find a new location? Say, maybe... Liberty Village!?!

Actually, I have tried parking @ Le Gourmand, and you're right, it's next to impossible. But more often than not, I take public transit to get down there...as do most people in that area. I think that because of it's location, Le Gourmand appeals mainly to those who work in the area. And, it's always busy, which means it's in a great location. But, if you really have to drive down there, you can always find parking on Queen.

As for Liberty Village, it's so far out of the way. Queen and Spadina is so much more central.

By the way, now that I've heard their explanation for closing and not informing the customers, I feel horrible for bad mouthing them and jumping to conclusions.

Why do you feel so horrible? Did you really say anything that bad? They closed for plumbing repairs but no sign was put up on the inside at that point. They could have put a sign on the door from the outside afterward as I am sure people wouldn't rip it down. They also could have tweeted with some better info. So I am not sure they were all that worried about their customers. Landlord disputes can drag on or get ugly so hopefully they figure that out soon!

LG is also super Bixi friendly for those of us living downtown. Three stations in close proximity.

Please don't let those chocolate chip cookies go away.

There's a parking lot attached to the building we are on. Just behind us accessible through Richmond just west of spadina. Hope that helps.
