Eden Eats Baltimore

I caught the last couple of minutes of "Eden Eats," a show on the Cooking Channel hosted by a girl named Eden. According to their website, these are a list of places that Eden visited on the latest Baltimore episode. Any Chowhound wisdom on these places?

  1. The Russian place serves shish kabobs, crab cakes and chicken parm with pasta??? I don't know a lot of Russian foods but the only thing I recognized was the pelmeni

    1. Interesting, I'll have to check out some of the restaurants. Kirchmayr makes excellent chocolates that are sold throughout Baltimore. They are not quote at the level of, say, Teuscher, or other excellent Belgian or Swiss chocolates, but they are close.

      1. Kirchmayr Chocolates are fantastic. Not only truffles and filled chocolates, they also make chocolate covered cherries and hazelnuts. Plus presentation boxes made from chocolate and filled with truffles. Pretty, unique and delicious.

        Lithuanian Hall. this is difficult. I'm Lithuanian so I wish that I could gush, but...the food is highly dependant upon the cook and what generation of immigrant the cook is. Those who arrived pre/early Soviet occupation prepare the same foods differently from those who began arriving in the mid-to-late eighties.

        i CAN, however, recommend stopping into the Hall for some Lithuanian Beer and virytas, a homemade honey liqueur. Both are tasty and potent, with the virytas leaving a nice trail of warmth. On a cold day, ask the bartender to warm the virytas for you. Beats a hot toddy anyday.

        At this time, the Hall is only open on Friday nights. There used to two hipster dances per month on the first and third Fridays. This has been reduced to one because of community complaints about noise and parking that cut back the Hall's closing time.

        One thing, Elvis rules at the hall. Every year, Johns Hopkins hosts their fundraiser Night of 100 Elvises at the Hall. This year it will be held on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1.

          Wow, that is fascinating info. Lithuania has such a sad history. Is there a kind of Lithuanian cooking you prefer: mid-80s and later or earlier?

            I grew up on my parents and their friends' cooking. I think it is more refined and uses higher quality/priced ingredients. The current immigrants made adjustments while under Soviet domination by substituting ingredients. Although LIthuania backs up to Russia, there was always a divide, most easily seen in the language. Lithuanian has no connection to Russian whatsoever. However, now the recipes have incorporated Russian flavors.

              So,, am I correct in thinking you'd have to go back pretty far to get Lithuanian cooking minus the Russian influence?

                Basically, yes. Every May, the Baltimore Lithuanian community puts on the Lithuanian Festival at the Catonsville Armory. There's a mixture of old school and current style foods available.

        2. It was a good episode but in classic "Baltimore" tv food show fashion some of the most interesting looking options were nowhere near Baltimore (much closer to DC where such a diversity of options is less surprising.) They could have done Peju's and kept it more local, but it was still interesting. Gonna try to hit the African places.
