Louisville - Jack Fry's & Doc Crow's (Review)
I'm a Toronto, Canada Chowhound just reporting in to say that after scouring the reco's Louisville CH's have posted in past, I picked Jack Fry's and Doc Crow's for dinner and lunch, respectively, on a recent trip through Louisville. I was not disappointed, so thank you!
I was travelling with family (adult sibling, our spouses & my parents) on a celebratory family trip (parent's big anniversary year) through the south (KY, TN, MO, MI). It was our first time in Kentucky, let alone Louisville, and the first night of the trip. I was looking for restos that had a local flavour, great vibe, great food, upscale but not uptight. You know the the type of parents: they appreciate good food and service, but don't like stuffiness or overpriced menus. These two places really fit the bill perfectly!
We went to Doc Crow's for our first lunch, and it was exactly what we were looking for. Walking distance from our hotel downtown, reasonably priced, casual, nice, airy room and a nicely executed dishes we rarely get to eat at home (po' boy sandwiches, fried catfish, hush puppies, etc.). Good beer. My dad LOVES oysters, and the raw bar was great. We normally steer away from deep fried foods, so when we do, it has to be worth the splurge on the waistline! Doc Crow's was terrific.
Then on to Jack Fry's for dinner. This was going to be my parent's celebratory anniversary dinner (we "kids" treating), and we really wanted a place that was unique to Louisville, with great food and a casual but upscale vibe. Jack Fry's was PERFECT. Terrific ambiance, cozy room, just enough energy and buzz in the air without being loud, jazz music, and a lovely menu by a creative chef with some local flair. Nice wine selections. Friendly and attentive service (they had asked when I made the reservation if it was a "special occasion", and had a nice special dessert for my parents ready, with candle, which was very appreciated (I'd asked for low key, no decorations and please no singing! :) ). I loved the photos around the room. It felt cozy, festive and happy without being formal or stuffy. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal, even my mother (who can be particular, and is allergic to alcohol - they accommodated her allergy without any issues). I had the halibut and it was excellent - light and delicious. Several of us had the diver scallops (those were divine). Others had the trout, and lamb chops. Everything was delicious! Desserts were also lovely. The only thing I didn't love was the warm fudge brownie with candied bacon, but I don't fault the restaurant. Bacon + chocolate is the new trend, and I've discovered that I prefer not having my chocolate interrupted by a strong competing flavour like bacon! I'd go back to Jack Fry's in a heartbeat.
So thanks, local CH's for those recommendations! Wish we had more time to eat our way through the city :) You folks in Louisville have some great restaurants.
