Hawaiian inspired rice side dish

cleopatra999 Sep 23, 2012 05:06 PM

I am bringing a rice side to a Hawaii themed party. I have no real clue about what to do here. Any ideas? I am thinking pineapple and pork?

This is a recipe based of the authors experiences in Hawaii. Not a recipe I have tried though! I have seen this recipe done with pork sausage instead of spam, but spam seems to be the more traditionally used meat.

Do you know what the other guest have volunteered bring to the party? Such knowledge may help you make your decision. Access websites using the keywords 'luau menu.' There may be some ideas for you at some of those websites.

Here is a page of recipes that have appeared in the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) monthly bulletins that are mailed with the electric bills and from other Hawaiian sources:

I like the idea of a spam fried rice, but it might be too hearty of a side dish. My host just said a hot rice dish to go with the chicken. I also found a recipe for macadamia nut rice pilaf, might be a great option, maybe a touch of toasted coconut on top too?

I think Musie has the best idea with the spam fried rice. If you just can't bring yourself to use spam, you use pork sausage of some form.

Spam fried rice is very Hawaiian. Just add spam to anything...
spam egg roll, spam sliders, spam dumplings, spam quiche, etc.
