Capital Grille on 51st. Any good?

gavspen Sep 22, 2012 06:41 AM

Anyone eaten there? I just got a $50 coupon in the mail.

I can find a few mentions but no comment on the food.

I've gotten that same coupon. From AMEX? I went a few years ago and, while I don't remember much else about the meal, the "au gratin potatoes" are worthy of changing lives. I still think about them...

I got the same coupon, AMEX. I'm planning on using it at the one downtown on Broadway.

It just came in the mail, unsolicited. Pay with an AMEX card, get $50 off.

The steak is Ok there. The drinks are as good as anywhere. You can't go wrong with a shrimp cocktail.

For 50 bucks sit at the bar, get a burger and a couple cocktails and walk out happy.

Yes, I suppose you're all correct. Kind of a no brainer, eh? $50 worth of free food? How bad can it be?

            Thanks all.

Now,that's the spirit. I've same deal and will take full advantage of the freebie.

We have gotten and used the same deal and just got another. Attractive place, very good food, and excellent service. It's not the sort of place I would otherwise seek out; it seems a bit generic stakehouse-y, even though it is upscale the decor is almost mall-like or like a stage set. I guess that's the chain formula aspect. That said, it was an enjoyable experience and one I am happy to repeat given the certificate. FWIW: Zagat's gives it high marks: food 24, decor 23, service 24 and 92% liked it for that location.

I know the CG on 42nd, but expect it & the one on 52nd are the same.
Meaning a place targeted at the expense -account MadMan: meat & potatoes, red wine, leather and polished brass decor -a lot of bonhomie. The place is not bad, but not outstandingly good.
If someone's sent you $50, though, I wouldn't reject it out of hand, but rather go and test it for yourself. (I mean are you really going to turn down a (nearly) free meal?)
