Crazy Ideas

Anyone have any crazy cooking/baking ideas?

Here's mine: Deep-frying in the oven - more temperature control, less fuss, less mess. Hm-mm...Would I burn the house down or not?

EDIT: On second thought, pulling the oven rack in and out would slosh the oil. Bad idea. And it would be difficult to take the food out at the right doneness. Sigh. Hence, crazy idea.

    1. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but in the case that you're not, deep frying in the oven gives someone much less control over the temperature. In the case that you are, forget what I said.

      1. Heh. I can see a disaster in the making... first the oil spills in the oven... then see The Towering Inferno with Steve McQueen for rest of story.

        I do my deep frying (which I don't do very frequently) with an electric deep fryer outside -- mainly because I don't like the smell in the house but also so I don't burn the place down in case of a major mishap.

        On the other hand, I do often use the oven when recipes call for simmering on stove top. Conversely, when on vacation in a place without an oven, I have often done things on stove top or on grill that normally would have been in oven.

        1. As the wife of a fireman I would discourage deep frying in the oven

          1. Just get one of those enclosed fry machines. Much safer!

            But you could a confit with controlled oil temp in the oven safely.
