Does anyone know of any reliable (and hopefully rather reasonably-priced) sources for fresh maitake mushrooms on the Central Coast or in SoCal? Is there a supplier of other "exotic" mushrooms - I've been craving for them for awhile now.

Cheers,

Here in San Diego there are two stores that might satisfy your desire: Nijiya Market and Mitsuwa Market. I think that both are parts of chains. So you might find them -- and their mushrooms -- elsewhere.

I've seen maitake mushrooms at Nijiya in San Diego. I would look for them in any Japanese grocery store. I'm sure you can find them in LA County.
