You had also posted this for the Meriden area, so I am going to advise on places between Meriden and New Haven, in that order. These are not my top 5 places, but they are my top 'ethnic' places that are clean and within the Meriden-New Haven area.

Wallingford- Thai food at Siam Valee on Ives Rd (right off route 5) (http://www.siamvalee.com/ ) . I enjoy almost all of the stir-fried dishes, DH LOVES their Tamarind duck. Atmosphere is so-so, but nicer than most Thai places around. Price range is a little higher than most Thai places, but I think the food is better, so it balances. Generally about $40 for the two of us.

Wallingford-Puerto Rican/Carribean food. Tatas restaurant, which is on Quinnipiac St (also right off route 5).( http://www.tatasrestaurant.com/dinner... )I enjoy the chicken in garlic (Pollo en ajillo), DH likes the Pernil (pork shoulder). Prices in the $15 per meal range or so. Atmosphere is ok, not super romantic or 'hip'

Hamden- Mickey's in Hamden, on Whitney Ave (http://www.mickeysgroup.com/ ) . Food covers a wide range, but can best be described as Mediterranean. Prices in the $20 per plate range. Atmosphere is better than the other two place above, and they have a nice wine list.

New Haven- Turkish food at Istanbul Cafe on Crown St (http://www.istanbulcafect.com/dinner_... ) . I have enjoyed many items on their menu, and they do a mean Babaganush . DH likes their lamb kebab. Prices in the 15-20 range or so. Atmosphere is nice enough, and sometimes they have belly dancers for entertainment (but that may be only on the weekend).

I would be interested to know where you wind up!

+! on Mickey's and Istanbul Cafe

I can't comment on Siam Valee, haven't been

Tata's is not what I'd call clean, clean as OP requested, not a birthday destination.

Mickey's is one of our favorite New Haven area restaurants, Very good food, nice ambiance. Good wine selection.
