Surprisingly good revisit to Gotham Bar and Grill

Hadn't been to Gotham Bar and Grill for years so entered with trepidation, but what a present surprise! Welcoming staff made it pleasant as we sat down to better than expected meal with a nod to current focus on farm to table and not ! (see the latest Times review on Le Cirque - arrgh) to memories of previous glory. Starters were a great beet salad with tangerines (just the right touch of acidity) followed by Muscovy duck with lovely foie gras. Others had green salad followed by Halibut - tasty and solid old favorite - lamb chops. Desserts also measured up with the Gotham Chocolate cake, with a side of salted caramel ice cream all that I remembered. WInes struck me as a little over priced but we managed able to discover okay reasonably priced French burgundies that served just fine and made for a pleasant evening.

I agree with the good food and service at Gotham.

I also agree about the over-priced wine list. While the list is definitely very broad and robust, in terms of regions and varietals, the bottle prices are at 4 times today's retail pricing! One will be hard-pressed to find anything of note and worth at less than $50.

Nice of them to have a Rully. But at 60 bucks? I hope you at least drank a 1er cru.

Like I said, their food's good, but not that good such that I'd want to peruse their overly- inflated wine prices. Plenty of restaurants here with better selection of good dishes and robust wine list that are not over-inflated in pricing. That's why I haven't been back to Gotham since more than a year ago.
