Try Woolgrowers. I've written a review about the place, but it's off the board. I can't find it. Turns out they've got their own Web site now. As Basque sheepherder style food goes, it's pretty good.

Decided to make a day trip up to Bakersfield today from LA to visit Dewar's Ice Cream and Fine Candy but decided to have lunch at Woolgrower's. Woolgrower's was noteworthy for a number or reasons: there were many true Basques eating there; it was in the older part of downtown Bakersfield which took us through some interesting neighborhoods, the food was plentiful and inexpensive. We decided to order the "family meal lunch" which meant that along with our entree choice, we received bread and butter, soup, salad, ranch beans, and salsa. Not being an expert in Basque sheepherder cuisine, I couldn't say how this restaurant compared to other Basque restaurants in the area but the bread was fresh, the beans were good, salad was OK and didn't try the salsa--thought it odd option but husband enjoyed it with the beans. We also ordered the scallopini and the roasted lamb as our entrees. The scallopini was not on the menu but since some apparent regulars at the next table had ordered it en masse we figured it must be good. The scallopini were pieces of beef with a brown mushroom gravy which could have served 4 people easily along with a side of noodles topped with Swiss cheese. It was delicious. The roasted lamb was too strong for my taste and seemed more like mutton.

After lunch, stopped at a neighborhood park to let 2 1/2 year old let off steam and then went to Dewar's Ice Cream and Fine Candies. I ordered a black and white sundae and husband ordered a chocolate ice milk malt. Wonderful!

In both cases, we could have ordered for one and split it. As it was, we really didn't need to eat for the rest of the day. Drove back to LA in a food-induced stupor.
